Comparing Farm Life and City Life

September 10, 2019 3 min read No Comments

Growing up in Alaska – I have heard a lot of bad jokes about living on a homestead, in an igloo, riding a moose to school – trust me I have heard it all! Then when I left Alaska and went to the “Big city” there were some overwhelming situations I had to face when I left Alaska.

Comparing farm and city life has been a common theme of situation comedies, movies as well as novels for decades. Many people find themselves questioning the advantages of living on a farm to living in the city. Whether you are buying a condo in New York City or buying small farms for sale in Michigan, it is important to consider how the options are similar as well as different.

City Life Advantages

Cities have multiple forms of education such as colleges and universities. You can get pretty much anything you want, at any time of the day or night. Entertainment is readily accessible in the form of libraries and museums, movie theaters, amusement parks and restaurants. In cities, there are a lot more jobs available and more opportunities for you to find a job. There are more opportunities for a healthy lifestyle, such as good doctors and vaccination opportunities.

City Life Disadvantages

The cost-of-living is typically higher in big cities, and it can cost you an arm and a leg for a small apartment in a decent area of the city. Although, it is possible to find a cheaper place to live, but typically it is in the not so great part of the city. There is always more crime in a big city, you are much more likely to be a victim of a crime, living in a big city than in a small town.

Farm Life Advantages

You look out your window every morning to see what people from the city pay big money to enjoy. You get to work outside in the fresh air, not cooped up in an office or factory. You grow your own food and you know exactly what went into it. It is always fresh, tastes much better and is better for you than food that comes from the grocery store. You can walk down the street and chances are you’ll see somebody you know.

Farm Life Disadvantages

You are working for the toughest boss you have ever had. You will get to work earlier, put in more hours and work later than any other boss would dare ask of you. You work outside in the snow, ice, and freezing weather, also in the heat of 100 degree days. Often you will be covered in trash and dust from harvesting crops or baling hay. You rarely get days off. You will be physically tired, mentally tired, and frequently poor as the cash flow of your business fluctuates seasonally.

In conclusion, both city and farm lives have their own positives and negatives. Of course, the ultimate situation of where you decide to reside is going to depend on what you prefer. There is no wrong answer, it is all preferences that you desire.
