First-time travel with a baby tips

Plan Ahead:

The key to a successful trip with a baby is meticulous planning. Start by researching your destination and accommodations to ensure they are family friendly. I made the mistake once of booking a tour that wasn’t kid friendly (because it wasn’t stroller accessible) and once I explained to the tour company that I’d be carrying my child on my body, they made an exception, but they ALMOST didn’t.

Make a checklist of items you’ll need, including diapers, baby wipes, formula or breast milk, baby food, extra clothes (for you and the baby), and any specific items your baby relies on for comfort.

Choose Baby-Friendly Accommodations:

Selecting the right accommodation is crucial when traveling with a baby. Look for hotels or vacation rentals that offer amenities like cribs, baby-proofing options, and a kitchenette for preparing baby meals. You can call ahead to confirm their baby-friendly services and inquire about any special arrangements they can make for your little one.

When I’ve booked hotels in the past, I used Hotels.com and ensured that on the hotel’s amenities list that it said, “child friendly” or “cribs available”. I never traveled with a Pack and Play unless I was road tripping, and I was able to get around this additional item being packed or checked because of these features for the hotels I selected. Many of the hotels saw the age of the child in my booking and automatically provided items for my child without me asking.

Timing is Everything:

Consider your baby’s schedule when planning your travel itinerary. Try to align flights or road trips with your baby’s nap times to minimize disruptions. Be prepared for unexpected delays, and plan for breaks during long journeys to give your baby time to stretch and play.

Pack Wisely:

While it’s tempting to pack everything, focus on the essentials to avoid unnecessary bulk. Pack enough diapers, wipes, and baby clothes for the duration of the trip, and bring a few extra, just in case. Don’t forget your baby’s favorite toys and blankets to provide comfort in unfamiliar surroundings.

Be Mindful of Feeding:

If you’re breastfeeding, plan for discreet and comfortable places to nurse. If you’re formula-feeding, pre-measure the formula and carry it in a dispenser for convenience. For older babies on solids, pack familiar and easily transportable snacks.

Prioritize Safety:

I know this tends to go without saying for parents but I’m going to cover it anyways. Ensure your baby’s safety by baby-proofing your accommodation upon arrival. Bring plug covers, corner guards, and a portable crib if needed. In transit, use a car seat or stroller that meets safety standards and is suitable for travel.

Stay Flexible:

While planning is crucial, it’s equally important to stay flexible. Babies can be unpredictable, and their needs may change unexpectedly. Be open to adjusting your plans and embrace the spontaneity of the journey.

Engage Your Baby:

Keep your baby entertained during the trip with age-appropriate toys, books, and interactive games. Engaging activities can distract your little one and make the travel experience more enjoyable for both of you.

Embarking on your first trip with a baby may seem challenging, but with careful planning and a flexible mindset, it can be a rewarding adventure. As a traveling mom who has been to more than twenty countries with her child at all stages of life (thus far) I understand needing to know the first-time travel with a baby tips. By prioritizing your baby’s needs, choosing baby-friendly accommodations, and staying adaptable, you can create lasting memories and build the foundation for a lifetime of family travels. Bon voyage!
