Depending on how long you are planning on being overseas you could obtain an international drivers permit or if you are going to be away for a while, license.
I am going through this learning process as we speak! Getting moved to Spain for three years I need to know how all this works before I leave.
So I have learned…PRACTICE!
There are a few things that you can do to prepare yourself to take the driver’s test, if you are going for your license. Like practice tests! https://driving-tests.org. This is a website that you can practice the written portion of the test for any country you are going to be in. I have been taking these practice exams a few times now and the more I take them, the better I am getting on the test for my scores and it is also helping me learn more Spanish!
If you are only going to be living or traveling overseas for a period of time and you want to drive yourself – there is a site just for you!
AAA has a special program where you can get an international drivers permit that is like your driving visa. Some countries require you to have this if you are planning on driving yourself anywhere because their roadways are different than what you might be used too and to decrease the amount of tourist accidents, countries have taken it upon themselves to set the standard for driving.
I have learned however, that since not all countries require this permit so you can just rent a car on just your passport too! Best idea is to look up what the rules are for the country(s) you are visiting and if the duration of your stay changes the rules – Knowledge is power!
