Buongiorno, fellow wanderers! I am beyond excited to share with you my personal guide to the unique things to do in Venice! So, grab a cappuccino and let’s get lost in the beauty and adventure that Venice has to offer!

“The Floating City”, Venice Italy, is one of the most romantic cities I have ever traveled to in my life. It is like the entire city is like a poem or a play unfolding over every bridge. The entire city sings, that might sound strange to say but around every corner you can hear a local artist playing their instruments, over every bridge you can hear the gondoliers singing romantic songs in Italian, the waves of the canals gently continuing to wear away at the foundation of the city “splash, splash”, gondolas tied up in a row bumping and rubbing against one another “squeaking” and “thudding”. The entire city is alive!

Explore the World’s First Ghetto

Venice is divided into six districts known as sestieri. These sestieri are Cannaregio, San Polo, Dorsoduro, Santa Croce, San Marco, and Castello. Each sestiere has its own distinct character, landmarks, and neighborhoods, contributing to the unique charm of Venice. Cannaregio is where the world’s first Ghetto is located.

The world’s first Ghetto was established in Venice in 1516. At that time, Jewish life was restricted in many cities around the world, but it was in Venice that the term “ghetto” originated. The word “ghetto” is believed to have derived from the name of the foundry (ghetto) that was located in the area. The Ghetto was surrounded by gates that were locked at night, and during the day, Jews had to wear distinguishing badges, such as yellow hats, to identify themselves.

Despite the restrictions, the Ghetto became a vibrant and culturally rich community. Over time, the Jewish population in Venice grew, attracting artists, intellectuals, and traders. The Ghetto also witnessed the development of unique architectural features, such as tall buildings known as “skyscrapers,” due to the limited space available.

Today, the Ghetto area is still home to a small Jewish community and is a significant historical site. Tourists can visit the Jewish Museum of Venice and explore the Ghetto’s narrow streets, synagogues, and landmarks to gain insight into the rich Jewish heritage and history of the area.
