Top Things To Do With Your Family in Hampton Roads…

September 9, 2019 3 min read No Comments

If you are like me…(which you may or may not be) right now my little family is living in a hotel for the next foreseeable future. Currently we are moving to Spain with my husband’s job and with that, we have blocks of time that we are in transition.

Living out of a hotel room for about five weeks with a toddler (who we are trying to make sure ISN’T glued to a screen ALL day) means we have to find things to fill the day between heat waves and rain storms. Living in a hotel with a toddler comes with it’s own struggles but finding things to do isn’t one of them!

So, what do you do when you have a 2-year-old and you don’t like to be stuck in a hotel all day? Here are a few ideas that we’ve been using to occupy our time while in VA.

  1. Take long walks:
This isn’t hard to do, whether you are staying at a friend’s house, military base, or just at a hotel there are countless parks, trails, beaches, ect that you can get out and enjoy nature and the sun in VA. No matter where you are in VA (especially Hampton Roads), there is an endless list of things to see and great designed trails and paths to get on to help encourage you to get out and enjoy your day outside of the walls of your hotel room.
  2. Visit VA Beach Aquarium:
We, as a family, really enjoy visiting aquariums anytime we get the chance. Thus far my nearly 3-year-old has been to about five aquariums in different states. It is a great way to expose your kids to amazing animals they haven’t had the chance to see before, very interactive for kids of all ages and on a hot day (like it gets in VA) the A/C can’t be beat either! Kids under the age of 3 are free which makes it even better if you are trying to save money while you are traveling.
  3. Hike Mount Trashmore:
If you are in the Virginia Beach visiting Mount Trashmore is a great option to let your kids run around! They have several play sets and they have the “Kiddy Cove” that is a HUGE play area for all age kids! Plus it is a great way to spend an hour or so walking around.
  4. Float the Chesapeake Bay
This is a great option on a beautiful day! You can rent a kayak or canon with your family and get out on the water – good chance you will see some wild life out on the water too!
  5. Take a Ride at Busch Gardens
Busch Gardens is awesome! When I lived here before (and was active duty) we used to go here twice a year, once for our free day that they give military members and then when they have Christmas Towne! There is no issues entertaining your family here.
  6. Visit A Winery (or two)
I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t give this at least as an option. There are several wineries in VA – and a decent handful in the Hampton Roads area! My two favorites are the Williamsburg Winery and Mermaid Winery.

I hope these options help you and your family make amazing memories. There are a ton of other things to do around Hampton roads – all you have to do is look around and you’ll find an endless list of places to explore
